Get Ready!
Do you go from being calm to being defensive? Do you find that certain memories make you sad or angry? Do people or situations trigger you? When your feelings are triggered, you may react with explosive emotions, withdrawing or shutting down, or trying too hard to keep the peace. Maybe you self-medicate with alcohol, excessive scrolling, emotional eating, poor sleep habits, stuffing your emotions, or overworking.
Unresolved hurt and pain from negative experiences can have control over all of us. They change the lens that we view life through. They affect our opinions, choices, and, most importantly, actions. You cannot eliminate emotional triggers without facing the hurt. The great news is that even though this process can be difficult at times, the rewards are amazing!
The purpose of this guide is to help you identify and heal unresolved hurt and pain and overcome your negative experiences by walking through the forgiveness process. This is the science of forgiveness and going through this process will reduce stress, increase meaningful connections with others, and set an example for people close to you. This builds RESILIENCE – the ability to recover from difficulties.
Resilience and forgiveness are closely connected because both involve choosing how to respond after experiencing hurt or disappointment. Forgiveness allows you to release what keeps you emotionally stuck, while resilience helps you adapt and move forward with greater clarity and strength.
Give yourself 30-60 minutes of uninterrupted space to process and heal through each of the 3 sessions, and you will begin to experience the freedom that forgiveness brings. Thinking about times when you’ve been hurt does not feel good, but the only way through it is to do it.
Session 1 – Concept 1
Forgiveness
FORGIVENESS BEGINS BY ACKNOWLEDGING THAT YOU HAVE BEEN HURT
What is Forgiveness?
Forgiveness is not
- Ignoring negative thoughts or memories
- Pretending that you don’t feel hurt or sad anymore
- Overlooking a wrong as if it never happened
- Making up excuses for the person who hurt you
- Staying in a bad situation and ignoring the consequences
Forgiveness is
- A process
- Making the choice to face your hurt, pain, and anger
- A way to find freedom from past hurts
- The release we need so we can move forward in our lives
You will only be able to heal and reach your full potential in life when you choose to fully forgive.
The Dangers of Not Forgiving
Unforgiveness is a silent enemy that slowly begins to take over of your life and your emotions. Unforgiveness can trigger destructive thoughts and actions. Not forgiving someone or holding a grudge, is like taking poison and hoping the other person will die.
Sometimes we choose not to forgive because:
- We fear it means we are excusing the other persons behavior
- We worry that forgiveness will make us vulnerable to be hurt again
- We feel that holding onto anger gives us control or protection
- We want an acknowledgment or an apology that hasn’t happened
- We have built part of our identity around being a victim and like the sympathy we receive
- We are still actively experiencing pain and aren’t ready to process it
- We believe the other person doesn’t deserve forgiveness
- We don’t know how to forgive or where to begin (this is exactly what this LIVE RESILIENT Guide is for)
Unforgiveness is toxic for your mind and body. Unforgiveness can cause:
- Increased anxiety and chronic worry
- Ongoing anger, irritability, or emotional reactivity
- Emotional numbness or withdrawal
- Reduced ability to experience joy or peace
- Inability to have meaningful relational connection with others
- High blood pressure
- Increased risk of heart disease
- Weakened immune system
- Autoimmune disorders
- Chronic headaches or migraines
- Digestive problems
- Sleep disturbances
- Increased inflammation throughout the body
- Faster biological aging
- Increased risk of addiction – alcohol, sex, food, drugs, gambling – as a way to numb the pain
Choose to let go and enter the freedom of a forgiving lifestyle. Choose to fight for your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
